BOWELS, BONES, TEETH, CANCER, BRAIN, DIABETES AND WEIGHT

Nuts and seeds to help build strong bones and teeth:  almonds due to their phosphorous content.

Nuts and seeds to help prevent constipation:  flaxseed meal and almonds.  The amount of fibre in 4 or 5 almonds is enough to keep your digestion and bowel movements regular.

Nuts and seeds to help to protect against various forms of cancer:  Walnuts, Brazil nuts (lots of selenium), almonds, and flaxseeds.

Nuts and seeds to protect against cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s Disease: Walnuts – they look like a brain, and almonds (carnitine).

Protection against diabetes: To reduce the spike in blood sugar after meals: Almonds, chia seeds, and flaxseeds.  If you are eating something sweet, eat a few nuts as well to reduce blood sugar spikes.

Weight loss and nuts:  Although nuts are high in fat, frequent nut eaters are thinner on average than those who almost never consume nuts. (Data from the Nurses’ Health Study).

  • Those who ate nuts at least two times per week were 31 percent less likely to gain weight than were those who never or seldom ate them in a study involving 8865 adults. (WHFood’s article on almonds).
  • They are a healthier choice of snack than chips, cakes or sweets, and as they help maintain blood sugar balance, can help prevent sweets cravings.
